9 Fridays at 9: Improv Every Way
Red Dirt Improv, the Oklahoma City-based improv and comedy troupe, will begin a run of shows entitled “9 Fridays at 9” on Jan. 22 at the IAO Gallery.
Every Friday night at 9pm for the next 9 weeks Red Dirt will explore a different facet of improv. The first week will feature short format improv—a great introduction to improv for people who are unfamiliar with it—and by the 9th week Red Dirt will be putting on a full length play based on a single audience suggestion. The weeks in between will feature a variety of styles of improv that span the spectrum of improv as an art form.
The first Friday will be a “Battle of the Sexes” show featuring guest players from Everybody and Their Dog. The show will be in a head to head format—with teams of comedians competing for laughs in a series of fast paced short games. For this performance the teams will be divided up based on gender to create the ultimate men vs. women comedic showdown.
Although every improv performance is unique, Red Dirt will perform a different kind of improv every Friday for nine weeks. A music night will showcase the performers abilities to improvise songs with live musicians accompanying them. A television night will be inspired entirely by what you see on TV—from cop shows to Reality TV to news broadcasts and even commercials. On the audience participation night members of the audience will be on stage with the players throughout the entire performance. Some nights will involve guest stars, and some will feature improv forms made famous in Chicago, but every night will be a new exploration for the improvisers on stage as well as the audience.
Performances will be Friday nights at 9pm at the IAO Gallery in downtown Oklahoma City, beginning on Jan. 22 and ending on March 19. Tickets are $10.
